The Gerdau Group's concern with the sustainable development of communities is an integral part of its daily practices. In all units, local labor is valued and partnerships are established with regional suppliers. In the communities where we operate, we participate in over 100 social projects, in addition to making tax payments, meeting our obligations with local governments.

In terms of our suppliers, over 90% of the paid resources are for companies located in the country where each operation is located.

In 2003, we directed R$ 1.6 billion in taxes and contributions to federal, state and municipal governments.

During the year, the Gerdau Group invested R$ 22.5 million (1.8% of the net income) to improve the quality of life of people and contribute to the construction of a more just society.

Through our social projects, we have made a solid commitment to transferring knowledge. Our involvement in this area includes formal teaching, education for volunteer work, entrepreneurship, total quality and research and scientific initiation. We are also involved in initiatives concerning the arts, health, and sports, in addition to our participation in solidary actions of emergency relief.
