Mill slag resulting from steel production. |

The Gerdau Group works in partnership with research centers and universities to permanently develop applications for the by-products resulting from the steel production process. Currently, mill slag, mill scale and carbochemicals are re-utilized by many economic segments, reducing the consumption of natural raw materials and the impact resulting from the extraction of such natural materials from the environment. In addition, this eco-efficient practice generates financial results for the company.
Mill slag, a by-product that results from scrap melting and steel refining, can be used in the paving of highways and in railways. Another type of mill slag, a by-product of the blast furnace, is used as a component in the manufacture of cement.
Mill scale, the result of steel solidification and oxidation, is applied primarily as a raw material in the sintering process at integrated steel mills and in the manufacture of cement.
Carbochemical products result from the coking process. At this industrial stage, charcoal is transformed into coke, an input for steelmaking. Currently, these by-products have over 25 applications. They are used, for example, as fuels and in the manufacture of aluminum, plastics, solvents, paints, dies and synthetic fibers.
