Gerdau Ameristeel, the company responsible for the Gerdau Group's operations in Canada and the United States, concentrated its efforts on the implementation of a management system for the improvement of industrial processes. The company also focused efforts on the application of management tools in all of its steel mills and downstream operations.
During the year, important industrial performance indicators revealed significant advances. Gerdau Ameristeel's performance in the area of safety improved 32%. In addition, flaws in billet production were practically eliminated and shipment delays were reduced by 23%.
At the end of 2003, Gerdau Ameristeel adopted yet another production goal: to reduce energy costs by up to 5%, representing savings of more than US$ 7 million per year.
