In 2003, 31.4% of Gerdau's steel production was concentrated in the United States. Gerdau Ameristeel, responsible for the Group's steelmaking activities in North America, operates seven steel mills and a 50% joint venture with coil producer Gallatin Steel in the United States. Gerdau Ameristeel ranks as the second largest long-steel producer in the U.S. Gerdau Ameristeel also has 20 rebar fabricating centers, nine downstream operations and six scrap collection and processing plants throughout the United States.
