The specialty steel sector is one of the Gerdau Group’s main focuses. The aim is for the Group to continue
seeking out new business opportunities in this area, positioning itself geographically so as to better
meet the demands of the automotive sector and other interconnected global industries. To this end, the
Gerdau Group acquired a 40% stake in the Spanish firm Sidenor in 2006. In turn, Sidenor has recently
acquired 100% of GSB Acero, also of Spain.
Total production capacity for specialty steel grew in 2006 from 500,000 to more than 1 million metric
tons per year. The Gerdau Group is currently market leader in Latin America and Spain, with a significant
share in Europe.
