Abby Reinke, a graduate and valedictorian of her class at Bonduel High School in Bonduel, Wis., was selected to receive a prestigious scholarship offered by Gerdau, one of the largest suppliers of long steel in the world. She is one of only 15 students to receive the scholarship, which is open to the children of Gerdau employees in North America.
“Our scholarship program allows us to invest in the future of these students,” said Walter Habeck, operations manager at Appleton Construction Products. “We are proud to support Abby in her education and wish her well on her future endeavors.”
Abby’s father, Jerry Reinke, works as the shop foreman at the Appleton facility. His daughter was honored for her achievement at a scholarship ceremony at the mill on July 25, where Habeck presented her with the award.
Candice will attend Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, and plans to major in engineering and secondary math education. While in high school, Abby was highly involved in many extracurricular activities such as National Honor Society, letter club, show choir, the school paper and math league. She was involved in Academic All-Conference, Badger Girls’ State Representative and the senior class officer. Abby’s dedication to academics is also mirrored by her dedication to athletics. She earned 11 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and softball, as well as various other awards.
Winners of the scholarship are awarded a $2,500 annual stipend towards their undergraduate degrees for up to four years. Winners are selected based on their standardized testing scores, as well as their commendable academic performance and significant contributions to their schools and communities. Candidates must be recommended by their respective schools and are required to submit an essay outlining their personal characteristics, activities, plans and goals.
The Gerdau Scholarship program is designed to promote Gerdau’s commitment to education, one of the five pillars of their social responsibility program. The other pillars of this program include community support, health and wellness, history and culture, and affordable housing.
