The Group’s social activities, through the Gerdau Institute, are focused on education – divided into five different areas – and community action.
Education
QUALITY IN EDUCATION – These programs aim at improving education, especially that provided in primary school, through initiatives targeting management practices in public school and educator training. In 2005, 82 related projects received R$ 5.4 million and helped 264,900 people in Brazil (see box: Quality Public Schools).

EDUCATION FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND COMPETITIVENESS – These programs are designed to encourage the entrepreneurial spirit of individuals and improve the management of public and private organizations to generate wealth for the communities. In 2005, the Gerdau Group invested R$ 10.2 million in 70 different projects. The projects assisted 3.6 million people (see box: Gerdau Helps Reveal Young Scientists).

EDUCATION FOR CULTURE AND SPORTS – Designed to encourage the development of self-esteem and increase awareness. Priority is given to sports and cultural programs that promote social inclusion. In 2005, the Group invested R$ 20.1 million in 70 projects that reached 2.8 million people.

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION – The objective is to raise awareness about the need to preserve nature and to encourage communities to maintain a sustainable relationship with the environment. This involves 24 projects, and an investment of R$ 1.1 million. In all, the programs benefited 50,900 people (see box: Gerdau Invests in Grasshopper Park).

EDUCATION FOR QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN THE THIRD SECTOR – The Group is committed to transforming social entities into self-sustainable institutions. It developed two projects in Brazil through the NGO Parceiros Voluntários (Volunteer Partners), directly benefiting 93 representatives from social institutions.

Community Action
The Gerdau Group supports initiatives designed to meet the emergency needs of people living near its units.
These activities include everything from the donation of food and warm clothing to the construction of popular restaurants for the low-income community as well as the generation of resources for child and teenager assistance funds. In 2005, the Group coordinated 166 projects. Investments in the area totaled R$ 4.3 million and reached 645,400 people.
